IN MEMORIAM.
XK WJll'JL'l—UUiEl'TAiN AND PROPHET. , The monument to be erected in memory of the late Maori prophet Te Uliiii at Parihaka is nearly completion at i lie yards of Messrs. KuSsell and Son. It is a massive column of polished auerdeeu granite, and stands eleven feet high. The basement is lour feet square, and on tliis is a solid circular column bearing the inscription and four small Peterhead columns. These are surmounted with a handsome cap and vase. The whole monument is being nicely carved, and on each side oi the four panels of the cap is tho emblem of Te Whiti. The inscription is being carved in Maori and English. The Maori inscription is as follows:
He Tohu ' Whakamalharatanga mo Te Whiti—o Rongomai, I mate Id Parihaka te 18 o nga ra o Noema. ite Tau oto Tatai Ariki, ora Tau 90.
He tanyata ia i mahiinga mahi nunui he peein ite kino kia tuc kotc Kangiiiiarie hoi oranga no nga wi katoiy ite ao ko tama tohu i waiho ake ki tona iwi ki. Te Ateawa Hie Raiikma Tona tikanga hoi kororia kite ntua i nmga. llei manunga-rongo ki runga. Kite wbenua. Hei whakniro paikite Tangata.
The interpretation reads:— This Monument is erected to the Memory of Te Whiti—o Eongomai, who died at Parihaka on 18th November, in the the year of our Lord 1907; aged 90 years. He was a man who did great deeds in suppressing evil so that peace may reign us a means of salvation to all people on earth. His emblem, the Raukura, which signifies "Glory to God on hi»h, peace on earth and goodwill to alf mankind," he bequeathed to his people Te Ate Awa. It is the intention of Messrs Russell and Son to have the memorial temporarily erected in their South road yards for a time before taking it to Parnhaka. There is expected to be a very large and reprcsentaive gathering ot | Maoris from all parts of the North IsI land at the unveiling ceremony on August 18th.
