MAORI CONGRESS.

(Carroll, Native Minister, in an address, eaid. lie was pleased to find the Maoris ■were now ready to regard the Maori JDouncil's seriously, and not to look upon them as playthings as ouce there had been some disposition to do. it bid been said that the Act under Which the Councils had got their power. did not give enough. If that were so, let the Maoris move to have the Act punended. Mr. Carroll spoke of the old system of sanitation, slating thai after Abe advent of the white man there had keen disagreements and the canoe had begun to drift. The time, had come jto make a strong effort to get back to better health conditions. Let the ■Maoris get the drifting canoe and turn it round stem to the torrent and Improper sanitation improve their dwellings, so that the people would become as physically fine as their ancestors. fThe weakness of the Maori Councils efforts to effect this improvement'so frr might be partly due to their insufficient power and funds, but it had to bo further said that jealousy on tne mart of those who were not members bad made the work more difficult.
; EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES. Wellington, Last Night. In the afternoon, the 'Hon. Geo. Fowlds introduced the matter of education and the native school system. He ouoted figures showing the advaii-x ' Siade by the schools since taken over by the Department, also regarding the economical methods adopted in working.
