SKATING CARMVAL. That roller-skating is becoming", a: popular pastime in New Plymouth was j evidenced last eveuing at the Theatre Royal, when a grand fancy dress and poster carnival was held. Many fancy costumes were worn, some of these being distinctly original and helping to make the scene a picturesque and animated one. An excellent programme of competitions was .submitted, the large audience demonstrating their appreciation by frequent applause. Considerinthat many of those taking part in the competitions are only beginners, the skating ability shown was excellent. , Considerable mirth was provoked by the clowns, dummies, tramps, etc., while the gyrations and trick skating of "Topsy" were the envy of all on wheels. The Garrison Band orchestra enlivened the proceedings with an excellent programme. The following are the competitions and winners:— Most graceful lady skater: Mrs. Black. Most graceful 'gentleman skater: Mr. Buxton. Most graceful couple: Mrs. Matthews and Mr. McAlpine. Best ladies' costume: Mrs. Matthews. Most comic character: Mr. A. RawBest sustained character: Mr. Smith. Most original costume: "Jockey Best boy skater under 16: Master J. Rowlings. Best girl skater under 10: Miss Hill. E"« and spoon race for gents: Master Rowlings. The prizes are to be distributed on Friday night.
