'JL'llJi AUAWA'S CONTINGENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Arawa, wlncii arrived in Wellington to-day, brought out a Urge contingent of third-class passengers, wllo intend settling down m Now Zealand. The total in tiiis class was 270 persons, and or these 104 liavo been granted, assisted passages. They eoine lroni all parts of the United Kingdom, iucluued in tlni list are nearly 30 domes m servants, bringing capital ranging rrom £2 to £lO each. There was one baker, one silversmith, and two carpenters, all going to work already found for tneni, also two joiners, a grocer, and a dressmaker. A dairy fanner arrives . with £4OO to his credit, and there are nvt farmers, whose capital between them amounts to £l5O. A fruit-preserv-. and wheelwright (combined) has £31)0 in hand. A bricklayer was among the passengers, who came straight out to a situation. There joined the Arawa at Hobarl a party of stalwart Tasiuaniau bushnien, who informed the Labor Office that they have come to New Zealand for a holiday, but that if they like the country they will remain in it. Several Wellington ladies were among the first to board the Arawa, not }\o' welcome friends returning from the grand tour, but to interview the domestic servants. Notwithstanding tempting terms and liberal concessions as to time out, with easy working conditions, the ladies were wholly unsuccessful in their quest for domestic helpers. Miss Brcmner, of Hie Labor Department, was among the visitors to the Arawa, and gave the women immigrants all the information which would be of assistance to them in getting remunerative employment, hut the domestics were a 1 engaged before leaving London. Seventeen of them have engagements in Hawkes' Bay.
