A DETECTIVE " CAUTIONED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night
A peculiar ease was heard at ttie Police Court yesterday, wnen 11 young man named John Leslie Smith was charged with being deemed a rogue and vagabond, in that he did 011 July 9 impose upon George Campbell, by false verbal representation, and obtain admission to His Majesty's Theatre by falsely slating he was a detective, with a view to obtain benefit. The police stated that accused on Tuesday and Thursday nights told the doorkeeper at tile theatre that he was a detective and secured free admission to the stalls, and that, when arrested he said he out it for a joke. The case for the defence was that on Tuesday accused paid for aduiisHon, making no representation as to 'being a detective, and 011 Thursday he paid in the ordinary course, but came Out at the interval, had a few drinks, and 011 return told the 'doorkeeper lie was a detective. Evidence having been given as to accused's gootl character, the case was dismissed with a caution.
.MILITARY K.VIJtTUY. Duuedin, Saturday Might. The Court of Inquiry convened by Licnt.-Colonel Smyth, commanding the Otago district, was held at the mobilisation stores to day, concerning the truth of certain resolutions alleged to r nave been put by Lieut. AV. llegg at the fortyeighth animal meeting of the North Otago Rilles, and to ascertain whether these resolutions were to the prejudice of good order and military discipline. The resolutions were:—"That the efficiency of this long-established company is imperilled by the refusal of the officer commanding the battalion to recommend Sergt.-Major lient'cll as Lieutenant, and as a protest against the highhanded action of tlie officer commanding this battalion, this company, having no other alternative, forthwith insbauds;" "that the members' of tlie North Duuedin Rilles hereby pledge themselves not to enroll in any company belonging to No. I 1 Battaflipli while under its present commander." Col. Stoncham gave evidence concerning certain correspondence between Lieut. Jjegg and himself. Jn this correspondence, witness .assumed the report of the meeting in the Otago Daily Times to, be correct, and Lieut, llegg 'had not impeached the accuracy of this report, but had rather confirmed it. Witness considered the second motion to be. prejudicial to good order and discipline, and a direct personal insult to liimself. The Court adjourned till 2 p.m. 011 j Monday,
WESTPORT COAL. AVestport, Saturday. A cargo of coal has been despatched to the New Hebrides by the Rakanoa. The vessel then goes 011 to Fiji. The coal is for English warships.
SOLVING THE UNEMPLOYED DIFFICULTY. Auckland, Saturday. The Labor Bureau lias received authority to employ fifty men on the Northern railway. It is anticipated that this will meet the demands of the unemployed.
