SOUTH AFRICAN TARIFF PROPOSALS. Received Julv 12, 4.30 p.m. Capetown, July 11. Durin« the recent meeting at Capetown of the South Africa Customs Union Convention, Mr. Merrinian an.l Mr. Fischer supported the proposed abandonment of tariff preference to the United Kingdom. Mr. Botha, declared the abandonment would be calamitous when the United Kingdom was obviously working round to tariff reform and Imperial preference. Mr. Fischer then sided with Mr. Botha, and the abandonment motion was defeated.
