"Well, Lonsie-ponsie, pet, you know father believes in heredity—that wise parents have wise children, and so on. Now, my father has never met any of your family; but last nigbt, at a vestrymeeting, father opposed a motion in favour of the docking of tom-cat's tails. When it was put to the vote, only father and one other man were against it. Alonso. that other man was your father. 31y father now thinks your father a very wise person, and desires the honour of his acquaintance! Isn't it scrumptious?"
A look of determination came across the youth's fair face. "Gwendoline," he said, "we must be married before our father's meet." "Why? Surely your father doesn't drink, or anything like that?" was the [amazed response. ">*o; only he's stone deaf!"
