SUPREME COURT RUSH

SUGGESTED SHORTAGE 01'' JUDGES,

At the Supreme Court yesterdav morning, before tho common jury was sworn, Mr. T. S. Weston asked his Honor the Judge if, for the convenience ot tho public he could iix the order of business, his Honor replied that he would take the business in the order as it appeared on the list, unless some different order was agreed upon by the solicitors engaged in the different cases. It was quite impossible for him, at this stage,_ to forecast the session. Had he unlimited time lie would be pleased to accede to the wishes of counsel, but unfortunately .his time was limited. Mr Weston said that personally he was engaged in some divorce cases, and he asked if his Honor could set these down for Thursday, to avoid the necessity for keeping the witnesses, among 'whom were several women about the Court. ■His Honor said that eertainlv !>• would not give that assurance, for :>■< hoped to get away to Wellington i» Thursday morning. Mr. Weston: Well, I don't think v„■, will, your Honor. I think we'll In- ■ lucky to finish on Saturday. His Honor said he would'have to l.viv I on Saturday morning, whether the business was finished or n ot. His own personal convenience was not studied at all. He had to work in Auckland right up to the time of leaving to take this Court here. He had to be in Wellington for the opening of the Appeal Court. Mr. Weston said it seemed a scandal that the Supreme Court Bench was so sparsely manned, not only on account of the amount of work, but because of the travelling entailed.

His Honor: That is a matter upon which I cannot, of course, express an opiuiou.
