RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
TRAIN DERAILED IN MANAWATU GORGE. By Telegraph.— Press Association. Wanganui, Monday. Passengers who came on from Woodville by express train had a sensational experience on Saturday afternoon shortly after leaving Woodville. When the train was partly through the (ir>t tunnel in the gorge, a large totara log fell across the line, bringing with it a quantity of earth just past the tunnel exit. The tunnel has a considerable curve, and tlie driver was unable to see tlie obstruction till he was almost upon it. The brakes were immediately applied, but not before the engine and a horse truck some distance from tlie engine had been derailed. The passengers, several of whom were in cars in the tunnel, were jerked from their seats by the concussion and the jerk of the brakes, but beyond the fright no injury was done. A special train was sent from Aslihurst, and the passengers were transferred several hours later. The Wanganui passengers arrived here about midnight.
