CHINESE ON BRITISH SHIPS.
A DISTURBING ELEMENT. MR. CHURCHILL COMPLIMENTED. Sydney, June 26. llio Seamen's Union adopted a resolution complimenting Mr. Winston Churchill, President of the British Board of Trade, on his recent action against the employment of Chinese on British ships. The secretary of the Union said the encroachment of Lascars and Chinese in the Australian shipping trade was becoming a very disturbing element. Ships engaged in the Pacific trade had found a way of signing on in the East and coming here with Chinese crews. lie also complained of the competition of Norwegian vessels with Norwegian crews, who were paid at lower rates than Australian crews.
