QUEENSLAND.
"HER PROSPERITY, ATTRACTIONS, AND FUTURE. SPEECH BY MR. KIDSTON. Received 2(ith, 10.30 p.m. London, June 20. A hundred and thirty persons (including Mr. W. P. Reeves, High Commissioner for New Zealand) were present at the Queensland dinner. Mr. Kidston, ex-Premier, replied to the toast of the evening. He expressed himself as gratified with the State's, display at Shepherd's Hush, and dilated upon the healthy expansion of all the industries of Queensland. In fullness or her prosperity, such as had never been known before, Queensland, he said, will not borrow any more money unless she can put the money to profitable use in developing tile resources of the country. Queensland was going to have a period of industrial activity. New railways would open up minerals and timber and new areas of agricultural laud suitable for settlement. The State wanted a steady stream of white immigrants. The more there came the better for Queenshind. Immigrants were better than an exhibition at Shepherd's Bush, which'was only a first essay in a propaganda for making Queensland known in the British Jsles. Queensland paid a large price for the establishment of the Commonwealth, To stop -unification would, he declared, be a misfortune for the development of Australia, There was an undoubted need for a central government, but also for strong and healthy State Governments.
