CARGO BROACHERS.
STIFF FINES IMPOSED.

This morning three firemen named ltobert Johnson, Charles Johns, and Arthur A«Miion, belonging to the Waikai* came before Mr. Hiddejl, S.M. for sentence. They had been found stealing a quantity of beer, valued at 3*, Indongiag to tlie I'oiOn Company. Chief Detective Melirath stated that he coultl not find any previous &eord against the uien. ' His Worship observed that the offence really amounted to broaching cargo. These offences were becoming more treqnent, and. owing to the difficulty in detecting them, wer- looked upon as being of a serious nature, if cargo broaching increased it would be necessary for the legislature to take some step? toward* instituting the right of search both <m flnnt!> and on ve»Sels. haeh defendant would \r fin ( 'd C>. in default *1 days' iniprirf^nmcnt.
