IRISH UNIVERSITY BILL.

STATEMENT BY CATHOLIC ARCH-

BISHOPS.

Received 18th, 0.30 p.m. London, June 18.

The Catholic Archbishops of Ireland have issued a statement in reference to the Universities' Bill. The statomeut declares that a Bill constructed on n' plan suited to the country's need is likely to lead to a finality. It proceeds: 'it is regrettable, as one of the evils incidental to the present system of legislation for Ireland, that provisions relating to the University of Dublin and its colleges arc not framed in accordance with the convictions of the Catholic nation. We believe that within fundamental conditions, which the Government mu-t accept, much more might ami ought 'o he done to meet legitimate rcquiMments. Headmasters ' <cf secondary schools should be represented oh the governing body of provincial colleges and the university. We bave seen with dismay that the college about to be established at Dublin is not intended to be residential. If this determination is persevered in, the consequence may be disastrous from a moral and religions equally with an educational standpoint. It is indefensible to throw hundreds uf youths into the streets of Dublin by side with the splendid provision made at the cost of the Irish nation for Episcopalian Protestants at Trinity College." London, June 17.»-

Referring to the Bishop of Limerick's statement that the Irish Bishops had met Mr. Birrell's Irish University Bill in a liberal spirit and submitted to priaciples utterly foreign to the Cataolicl Church. The Times states that unless the Tope has sanctioned this submission, he might at any moment repudiate the bargain as made behind his back. 'lue Times asks Mr. Birrell to state if thM authorities at Rome 'have clearly and formally sanctioned ihis scheme.
