HAWERA POULTRY SHOW.
The Uawera Poultry. Pigeon and Canary Society's show opened yesterday at llawcra favored by excellent weather. The attendance of the public was not large during the day. All the exhibits were staged for the early commencement of judging, with the result that the awards were made in good time. Mr. A. S. Palmer, of Washdykc, judged the poultry and ducks, and Mr. A. C. Johnstone, of Lepperton, the pigeons and cage birds. Exhibits were not a> numerous as at last year's show, but on the whole the birds shown were of excellent quality. 'Particularly was thithe case in Black Orpingtons and Oriental frill pigeons, the championships in these classes attracting considerable oik side competition. Black Orpmgtov were a strong section, both in number* ; and iu quality, cockerels and pullets es pecially so. There was a .marked falling oil' in the Leghorn classes, dosm'.-. the fact that this breed is now looked to for the great portion ol" our egg supply. This opens up the question of show i birds versus utility birds, and the judging at this and other shows gives evid cnee that the two strains may be as ilis liuct as the poles. For instance, the f judge at the llawcra show seemed l(i have a decided liking for feathered Or Ipingtous. yet he remarked to an exhibit or during the afternoon that breeding to that typo could not fail to ruin egg producing qualities. Game was any ■ thing but. a big class, Mr. It. Davidson ; of New Plymouth, securing most of tin awards with some vei'v line specimens Mr. W.
