OBITUARY.

CAPTAIN HOLFORD. On Friday morning news was receive I of the death of Captain Sam Holforl,' who went ashore at Napier from Jiis vessel, the \Vbangape, five weeks ago for medical advice and treatment. He was the youngest son of the late Captain Holford, for many years harbormaster at Xew Plymouth. He was born "n June 20th' ISCi, and attended the schools of .Mr Kllis and Mr .1. C. Adam* in Xew Plymouth. For the past six month*, l>.-r had been in lad health, and five wwks. ago was compelled to come ashore I>r trea-tment, suffering from cancer of tin' stomach, the cause of bis death. He leaves a widow, the youngest daughter of Mr. Robert Cunningham, of this town, and one boy, about ten years ol age, for whom the deepest sympathy will be felt by a very larg i: circle of friend*. He will be buried at Napier on Sunday.

Our Stratford correspondent wrote last night:—A very old settler of Strat ford, Mr. James Reid, was found dead this afternoon, close to his wood-heap'. The discovery was made by his grandson, Master Tyrer. Dr. Carbery was al once called, and gave it as his opinion that deceased had been dead about four hours. He was 06 years of age, and was universally respected.
