Principal Warder Downcs, of the New Vlymouth prison, left on .Monday morning with two men for Wanganni, to supervise the erection of a cottage at the Wanganui jjaol. Mr. Jesse lluett, one of Wellington's oldest identities, celebrated oil Kuiidav his Kith birthdiiv. Mr. lluett is still hale and hearty, 'lie belonged to the oSih Hegiinent' of Foot (Blacken lis), with which he saw considerable service in many part* of the colony. Of those who served with the 58th i'n New Zealand, tlwre are but few left now. As the result of a quiet canvass amongst the personal friends of the Hon. John Kigg, M.LC, that gentleman who is about, to be married, was privately presented with a cheque (representing a three-ligure sum) on Monday afternoon a« a token of the good feeling thev bear towards him.
