Tile engineer (Mr. .lohn Skinner) reported that the contracts for the Mangamawhcte ami Timani bridges were going on satisfactorily, as also was tiiat of Oakura hill deviation. He asked that control of traflic over the above bridges lie placed in the hand, of the contractors. At Tim.ini. particularly, the rate of speed was as a rule excessive, endangering the lives of the contractors' workmen. He had, at the request of the district roads engineer (Mr. Murray) uiaile a rough plan of a culvert bridge for Te Henni river at Cliff's, and mad.! an estimate of total eewt of a straight road as originally proposed. This was considerably above the cost of the sidinj! road as proposed by him. Mr. Murray favoured a mail leading through Messrs SaxtonV and Jordan's farms. This could lie managed by a tunnel and heavj filling similar to that at Tapuae, an. would In- probably the cheapest and best for the county a, a whole, but wouh cnt oIT the I'ukctotara lands. The dis lance would lie the same a-, the preseni proposal. Mr. Skinner was iu favor o this, with tin- exception of tlie cuttin; off of I'ukctotara. and would ask f«i iiiftructioiis to make a survey of th route.
