A DISAPPOINTED BURGLAR.
Per Press Association. Invereargill, Last Night.
What is described as a rather clumsy case of breaking and entering occurred at the railway goods shed between Friday night and Saturday morning. On Friday about CIOO was known to have been in the drawer in the office in anticipation of pay day. The money, However, was put in the safe for the night, and when the drawer mis broken open the burglar found only a. few stamps, which ho .seemingly scorned to take.
STORES FOR CASTAWAYS.
Wellington, Last Night.
Mr. Allport, Secretary for Marine, received a telegram from Captain Bollons, of the Hinemoa, this morning, stating that the stores consumed by the crew of the French ship President Felix Faure had been replaced in the depot for castaways on Antipodes Island, and that everything was now left in order. Mr. Allport also received a telegram from iLyttclton to the effect that Captain Quale, of H.M.S. Pegasus, had landed stores on Rosa and Hnderby Island*, and that the depots at Auckland and Campbell Islands were intact and the stores in good condition.
EARTHQUAKE SHOCK.
Napier, Monday.
Tile earthquake yesterday morning Mas sufficiently severe to send people out of their houses, but no damage is reported.
Waipawa, Monday
A sharp earthquake, preceded by a louil rustling noise, -was experienced' about !),48 yesterday morning. Jt causcii much alarm. No damage is reported. Woodvillc, Monday. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 0.50 yesterday morning. *
AN EVANGELIST IN TROUBLE.
Christchurcli, Monday
An evangelist who by sonic means incurred the wrath of a mob of larrikins last evening had to get away hurriedly from his pitch at the City Hotel. The mob followed, pelting him" and his supporters with mud. A great crowd assembled. Serious injury to the evangelist was averted by the intervention of the poliee. , : ,■. ■
MANAWATU GORGE ROAD.
Woodvillc, June 1
The road through the Manawatu Gorge has been cleared after having been closed tor years. It has not yet been declared open for trallic, AUCKLAND CUSTOMS RETURNS. Auckland, Monday. The Customs duties collected at Auckland during May amounted to £48,57(1, and the beer duty £20114. Refunds and drawbacks have to be dedueled. DECEASED PERSONS' ESTATES.
