At a meeting of the Auckland temperance crusaders to-night a resolution was carried that the Mayor be request - ed to use his inlluencc to have ail hotel bars closed during the visit of the American tleet to Auckland.

Duncdin, Last Night. The Licensing Jiench granted all renewals and transfers. Reference was made to instances of youths being arrested for drunkenness. Publicans'generally a.ppcared anxious to prevent juveniles from frequenting licensed premises. The practice was that young fellows procured liquor in bottles for consumption, and drank the contents in ibe streets. The chairman said the publican's should prevent as far as possible such a practice. If was also mentioned that there appeared to be little drinking in hotels by women, but. women were seen to frequent hotels to get liquor for home consumption.

THE PItACTTCE OF CASHLNT CHEQUES.

Wellington, Last Night. At the meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day, the chairman, l)r. A. AltArthur, S.M., read some remarks recently made by his Honor Mr. Justice Chapman, relative to the manner in which cheques are cashed by business people, regardless of the consequences. He hoped, he said, that licensees would he careful about giving blank cheques or cashing cheques tendered by unknown people. He absolved the blinks absolutely from any blame in the matter.

DRINKING AMONG WOMEN.

Wellington, June 1. At a meeting of the Wellington Licensing Committee held to-day, the New Zealand Alliance wrote in' reference to the report of drinking among women in Auckland, and asking if aiteli a state of affairs was at all general in the Dominion. A report of the police on the subject was read, stating that in the Wellington hotels in busy thoroughfares women arc seldom seen'either drinking or carrying out liquor for consumption, hut in hotels where a special room or bar was kept for selling liquor by bottle at wholesale prices women were frequently seen buying bottles, and in hotels in the residential parts of the city women were frequently seen calling to purchase liquor, mostly beer. The women doing so. adds the report, are clearly messengers fo r their husbands, and appear to be working men's wives. The. chairman said the committee ami himself were pleased to know that drinking among women here was not in accord with the state of affairs recently reported in Auckland.
