PRESERVING WANCANUI RIVER ' SCENERY. Per Press Association. Wellington, Monday. Cabinet has decided to take steps to protect the scenery along the Wangauui river, which is endangered by throwing open additional lands for settlement. An area ol' -iIi.OOO acres of bush along both banks of the liver will be preserved.

ATTACKED JN TIIK STREET. Wellington, Monday. While going along Clyde ijuay about \) o'clock on Saturday night, a voung married man named John Forbes Orr WiU suddenly attacked by a man, who stabbed him in the neck, milk-ting a severe wound, which ju-4 missed tile jugular vein. The assailant, who also threatened to shoot Orr. then calmly walked away as if nothing had happened. There appeal's to have been no reason for the outrage. The assailant was a big, burly man, unknown to Orr, who is of small physiijuc. The injury is not likely to have any more .serious result than of incapacitating Orr for some da vs.

DEPARTURE OK THE lONIC. Wellington, Last Night. The lonic, whose departure had been delayed on aecount of the lire which broke out in No. 1 hold, got away to London shortly after noon to-day. The work of discharging the frozen meat cargo from No. 2 hold of the steamer was carried on right through Sunday, otherwise the departure would have been delayed until to-niorrow. An arrangement has been made whereby .Messrs. W. lloss and Co., of FoxLon, will deal with the flax discharged from the steamer, and Mr. M. F. JJourke, ot Wellington, will re-condition the wool at his Napier works.

PRE-SESSIONAL ADDRESS. Duiiedin, Last Night. Mr. E. CJ. Allen, M.l\ for Port Chalmers, delivered a pre-sessional address at North-East Valley to-night. Jle reviewed the legislation of the past session, commending the measures passed, and announced his intention of contesting the Port Chalmers seat at the general election. He was accorded an unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.
