MR. DEAKIN'S SCHEME. THE DIFFICULTIES VERY GREAT. STATEMENT IN THE COMMONS. Received 24th, 4.30 p.m. London, May 23. In the House of Commons, Mr. It. MeKenna, First Lord of the Admiralty, stated that' the. Australian naval subsidy would cease automatically in 1913, or earlier, if the new arrangement foreshadowed by the Colonial Premiers' Conference was ratified. He added that the scheme put forward by Mr. Deakin was at present only a bare outline, and required much amplification before it could be discussed with advantage, while the dilliculties inherent to it were very great.
