The Chief Detective stated that defendant was engaged in promoting a sweep, including 25,000 members, on the Wanganui Steeplechase. For 1 selling tickets several persons were lined last week. A fine of .€lO and costs was imposed in tlie present case by Mr. Kiddcll, S.M.
NO-LICENSE PARTY. AND POLITICS. Napier, Last Night. The Napier Temperance Council unanimously passed Hie following resolution:—'"ln view of statements which have recently been made, this Council wishes it to bo understood »that unless compelled to do so, to ensure a contest, the temperance party will not be identified with ' any Parliamentary candidate at the forthcoming election."

Masterton, Last Night. The liorough Council to-night decided lo purchase the Masterton showgrounds for recreation purposes, subject to the approval of the ratepayers being secured. AUIJITHATIOX COi'KT. Auckland, Last Night. In the hairdressers' dispute the Arbitration Court has granted the men's demands for a week, anil fixed the wages for competent journeymen at Ki 8s per week, the same as the Wellingluu agreement. The men have been receiving C2 5s for a week of .">7 hours. In the farriers' dispute the men's demands for 10s per day for farriers and general smiths and 8s- 4d for Doormen, have been conceded. The employers offered l)s Id and 8s respectively.
LODOE JUBILEE. Napier, Last Night. The jubilee of Loyal Napier Ijodge, Independent Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity, established in' 1858, was celebrated by a reunion to-night. It is interesting to note that the lodge's dispensation, which is dated 12th May, 1836, was signed by, among others, Bro. T. W. McKenzie, the well-known- veteran journalist o'f Wellington, who was then provincial corresponding secretary of the Wellington district. The reunion was numerously attended, and the speakers included the Mayor (Bro. J. Vigor Brown) and Tiros, ,T. Smith and Ahuhdcy. or Wellington. THE PRICE OF BREAD. Auckland, hist Night.
