EGMONT RACING CLUB. FIRST DAY.

Though threatening at time-?, the weather was very favorable foe the upuuiuK day of tli>' Hawera winter meeting, which was fairly well atU'luleil. The track, though somewhat hciiy.v, was in good older. 'l'lic fields tliroughout the day were large, and the racing distinctly good, some of the fiinishes being par- ■ ticularly close. A feature of the meeting was the excellent starting of Mr. O'Connor, all his fields, except one perhaps, being despatched on tin- eyeiicst of terms. Mo accidents marred the pleasure of the outing, although Mikntilll was unfortunate enough to slip her fetlock after finishing in the Kailway Handicap. There was only one protest during the day, against Mount

' Cook for crossing Compass in tliu ' straight, and it was dismissed. The ar- • rangements for the meeting were as ■ usual complete in every department, and the programme was got olf well to I time. The Hawera Band enliyencd the proceedings during the weights, and the united voices of sixteen "booki.es" -were an harmonious accompaniment.
