THE TUAI'EKA SEAT.

Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. Dr. Chappie, of Wellington, and A. Eraser, of Lawrence, are delinitely announced as candidates for tile Tuapekti seat. The latter gentleman contested the seat in 1899. If is understood that If. 1). Bedford, who contested the Dunedin North seal, at. last election, will lie a candidate for Taieri in the Government interest at tile General Election.

MR. MASSEY ON TOUR. Oisborne, Last Night. .Mr. W. F. MasSey, Leader of the Opposition, addressed a crowded audience in II is Majesty's Theatre last evening, lie criticised the Government policy, and claimed that the Opposition had not only performed useful work in checking anil amending legislation, but had also propounded proposals amounting to a policy which has actually been placed upon the Statute Book. He dealt fully with the Arbitration Act and Socialism In regard to the former he agreed with the Premier that there must be some provision for classification of men. The present dead level system must bo amended. He favored an Appeal Court to which appeals on the Arbitration Court points of law could be made. He considered f.he discouragement of apprentices by unions would cause tne I colony in the future to have to import skilled labor. in regard to Socialism, he favored State assistance but not taking the place of private enterprise. He strongly urged unionists to recognise that their interests were not identical with those of Socialists whose propaganda if given piled to, would prevent the worker from bettering his position. Mr. Massey dealt fully with the land question, and criticised the Government's iinaneial methods in terms of his former speeches. Mr. Kerrics, M.P., was also present, and with Mr. Massey leaves for the South to-morrow morning.
