GOVERNOR-GENERAL ADVISES SELF-RELIANCE. Sydney, April 28. Lord Northcote, Governor-General of Australia, speaking at the celebration of the landing of Captain Oook, said that, though he was perfectly certain • the Mother Country would discharge to 1 the best of her ability her duty in the defence of Australia, yet she was 12,000 1 mileß away, and might have to fight at any moment in her own defence. Australia should take a large share now in her own defence. Her present immunity from attack could not be counted en as permanent. Let them call in advisers while there was yet time, and import for their pioneers men who, like Cook and his followers, knew iow to defend the land they had assisted In creating.
