PROPOSED RECEPTION AT AUCK-, liAND. • Per Press Association. Auckland, Last Night A large and representative meeting of oitfeens presided over by the Mayor, was held bhiß afternoon for the purpose of deciding what ateps should be taken, to accord a fitting civic reception to the American fleet. The Mayor said that independently of what was done by the Government, it behoved the ottirens of Auckland to give the visitors a welcome, worthy of the city. On his motion a, general committee oonsisttng of tie Mayors and channen of other local bodies, together with Ahe members ofthe Oity Council ahid Harbor Board ' (with power to add to tlieir number)* . was aeit up, with authority to organise, a programme of entertainments and to appoint a subcommittee to aeeiat ia - carrying out the details of the scheme. It was stated that ample provision would . be made for the entertainment of both officers and men. A list of suggested functions was read by the Mayor, and it was agreed that they be referred to the committee to deal with. The Ameri. can Oonsul-General for New Zealand (Mr. W„ Prickitt) was present, and reeeived an enbhusinstic reception on rising to express his willingness to cooperate as fan as possible in carrying out the objeetn of the meeting.
