THE RAILWAY DISASTER.
DID THE BRAKES FAIL? OVERWORKED ENGINEERS. '. Melbourne, April 24. The question whether the Bendigo train's brakes failed is engaging the attention of experts. Experts express the opinion that they were on, and that they gave rigidity to the train, which prevented any of its cars from telescop-
ing. The report of the engineer on the second engine lias leaked out. He declares the signals were against 'them. He next observed that the train was not being pulled up at the usual spot. He Chen [applied his brakes, but they failed to act.
The Chief Connnidsioner denies that there, was any delay in getting relief away. The ambulance train was despatched fifteen minutes after the news was received. Everything was in readlj ness, but the services of the doctors had to be obtained. Enrl Crewe, Secretary of State for the I Colonies, cabled his sorrow and regret from London. Milburn, the driver of the Bendigo train, had been on duty eleven hours thirty minutes ; while the driver and fireman of the second engine had commenced work at 4.45 in the morning and had been on duty eighteen hours.
