The Borough Council to-night voted the Mayor (Mr. .J. Vigor Brown) an honorarium of .-£2OO for his past year's services. The Mayor stated that neither his income nor his business had suffered through attending to the duties of Ilia position, and he proposed to give £SO of the honorarium towards establishing a free reading-room at Port Ahuriri. and £l5O in erecting swings on the b< ach and otherwise providing recreation for the young.

LOCAL BUTTER MARKET. Wellington, Last Night. There was a drop of one penny pel' pound in the retail price of butter this morning, anil the ruling rate is Is 3d. Supplies have kept up well, and factories in Manawatu, Wairarapa, and Taranaki are generally making more butter now than was the ease at the end of February. AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD. Auckland, Last Night. The Chairman of the Harbour Board announced yesterday afternoon that the revenue for the lirst three months of 1908 showed an increase of £2748 4s lOd. THE MAIN TRUNK. Wellington, Wednesday. ill'. R. W. Holmes, Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Pepartment, who returned from the North to-day, informed a Post reporter that he was satisfied that, if the weather during the coming winter was not unusually bad, the North Island .Main Trunk Railway would be opened for traffic at the end of the year. He thinks the Makatote viaduct will be finished in two month', and that at the end of this month the gap between the railheads will be reduced to nine miles. THE "RAILWAY REVIEW." Tin- Cross Creek brunch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants passed a resolution regretting the action of the majority of the conference of delegates in dispensing with the services of Mr. Hornsby, M.P., as editor of the. Railway Review. It was also decided that the valuable services rendered by Mr. llornsby during his term as editor should be placed on record.
