FIRES.
Pier Press Association. Oamaru. Last Night. A lire was discovered in the lower story of A. and D. Simpson's furniture warehouse this eveuing at 7.30 o'clock, and it was extinguished only after the place had heen Hooded with water. The lire .started amongst some llax, and had >}iread to other inflammable material. The insurances are .Clf><) in tlie Soul'i l!rili>ii ami in the Royal Assurance, The furnilme and *lnck was not. much damaged, but the extent or the loss cannot be ascertained till after an overhaul.
Tnvercargillj Last Night. A five-roomed house occupied by Thomas Hunt and family at Waikiwi was burned this evening. The children were alone in the house, and one, while 1 looking with a candle for a plaything, ! fire to the sofa. The children got | out just in time. The insurances are not available. Gore, Last Night. A lire destroyed three business places in Bridge street, opposite the scene of the recent lire. The lire started at the back of F. Thorn's bootmaker's shop, which had been occupied as a dwelling, but at present was unoccupied. The llaiues spread to Quilter's fruit and confectionery shops, which were destroyed, but a cordial factory in the rear was saved. B. Downes' blacksmith and implement premises were next destroyed. The latter contained a, considerable amount of machinery owned by J. Lowden. senr. The insurances amount to .CIOOO, and the loss over" that is estimated at £OOO. Maslerton, Wednesday. A dwelling owned by J. Tait waa'destroyed by fire. The building was insured lor ,C3l)0 in the United Oitice, and the furniture for £75 in the North British. Mrs. Meßride, the occupier, was absent fom Masterton at the time of the lire.
