JUDGE SHOT BY HIS SON

New York, February 7.

Ex-Judge James Hargis, who was a leader of one faction of a Kentucky feud which had cost a score of lives, and who with his friends spent £40,000 in defending himself against charges of murder, was shot dead this afternoon at his store at Jackson, Kentucky. Strange to say, death was not due to the feud, but to the result of ordering his son Beech home. Beech Hargis is known as a prodigal. Only the bare facts of the tragedy have reached New York, but details are yet unknown, though it is understood that the son had lieen drinking. Judge Hargis a month ago tried to select a casket to use at his funeral. None in the stock of the concern known as the Collin Trust suited him, and he ordered one of his own design to cost £3OO. This afternoon the widow wired to the Trust:

''Send by express to-day the casket selected by James Hargis, as he is dead.''

Among men for the murder of whom Hargis was tried were Dr. Cox and Jas. Maciiiu. Cox was related to a man who killed a Hargis over a political quarre 1 . A nephew of Hargis confessed that he killed Ma renin, who was going to court to testify against Hargis. His widow dipped a handkerchief in his blood and vowed to avenge his death.
