MURDER BY A GIRL
Berlin, February 11. The police have just unravelled the circumstances of one of the most remarkable murders of modern times, which took place nine months ago at Chemnitz. On May 14th of last year a well-to-do engineer named Pressler was found dead in his room in that town. A will was found bci|iieathing all Pressler's belongings to his lianccc, Fraulein (Jrcte Beyer, the twcnty-two-year-old daughter of the mayor of the Saxou town of Brandt. Suspicions afterwards fell on the girl, ,who was arrested. Today her mother and her lover, a Dresden merchant named Merker, were also arrested for instigating the crime. Fraulein Beye; has made the following confession to tli e police. She was in love with Merker but her mother encouraged her to become at the same time engaged to I'ressler, on account of his fortune. Pressler became so infatuated with her that he drew up a will in her favour. Then, on her tweuty-secoml birthday Fraulein Beyer called ou I'ressler and told him that she had a pleasant surprise. But lirst he innst be blindfolded and open his mouth. Pressler, entering into what he regarded as the humour of the situation, himself bandaged his eyes and opened his mouth. Thereupon, Fraulein Beyer drew a revolver, and placing the band in his mouth, shot him through the head. She then fled, leaving behind her the revolver, so that the police might be led to tlie conclusion that the case was one of suicide.
