ARBITRATION COURT. Wellington, Last Night. At a sitting of the Arbitration Court-to-day the Levin Meat Company, for a breach of the preference clause of an award, was fined .CSO. G. Rowell, for paying less than the rates stipulated in the drivers' award, was fined £5, and Twohey, the man employed, 10s. H. Fielder and Co. were fined £2 for employing a man at less than the minimum wage; and a similar line was imposed on the Wellington Woodware Company for employing an uninden- , Hired lad. W. Day and C. ,T. Johnston were each lined X.l for employing nonunionists.

COMPENSATION FOR LAND ACQUIRED. Christchurch,_ Last Night. Proceedings in connection with the compulsory acquisition of the CuTverdon Estate opened to-day before tlio Compensation Court, of" which Mr. Justice Denniston sat as president, with Mr McFarlane (for trustees) and Mr. J. Rennie (for the Crown) as assessors. The claim for compensation was made by Edward Cephas, John Stevens, and Ranald Macintosh Mac Donald, trustees under the will of the late Sir John pracroft Wilson in respect of the Culverden Estate intended to be taken compulsovily by the Crown under the Lands for Settlement Consolidation Act, 1900. The whole block, which is being acquired by the Government, comprises 25,155 acres, and the total amount of the claim is £162,037. Mr. T. W. Stringer, K.C., with Mr. '£. G. Russefl, appeared gor the claimants, and -Mr. 1). M. Findlay, with Mr J. A. Ca-ssidy, for the Crown. j Evidence was given by several witnesses in support of the claim.

LABORERS' DISPUTE. Palmerston N., Last Night. The employers cited in the general laborers' dispute met here to-night and resolved to confirm the resolution passed at the Marton conference to-day. The services of Mr. Pryor were retained to conduct the ease for the employers before the Arbitration Court.

WESTPORT HARBOR BOARD. Westport, Last Night. At a meeting of the Westport Harbor Board to-day it was resolved to take steps to have a loan bill passed this session of Parliament for £200,000 for harbor improvement. It is proposed to procure one or two 1000-ton capacity suction dredges, this being double th« capacity of the Rubi Seddon, the Board's present dredge.

NEW SCHOOL OF MINES BUILDING, Dunedin, Last Night.

The University Council held a special meeting this afternoon to consider the tenders received for the erection of a new school of mines. Dr. Sliand said at the last meeting that the Council found the lowest considerably exceeded the amount of £4OOO granted by the Government for the erection of a building. Application was made to the Government for an additional £IOOO, and Cabinet had authorised this expenditure. There would not now be any difficulty in the way of accepting a tender and at once proceding with the erection of a building. A tender amounting to £4363 was accepted. It was also decided to ask the Government to pay £SOO, authorised, before March 31.

PROHIBITION BY SIMPLE MAJORITY. Dunedin, Last Night. At a conference of no-license workers this evening a proposal was carried to ■thc_ effect that the No-license Party is entitled to determine the issues on the licensing question by a simple majority. It was also decided to support the New Zealand Alliance in asking Parliament that the Dominion No-license vote lie given to the people to be taken on the same day as the local option vote, and this to be decided also bv a simple majority. The necessity of altering the law so that the licensing vote should be irrespective of whether three years had lapsed, was also affirmed.
