RUN ON GRASS SEED
I'OI'ULAIUTY OF ENGLISH SAMPLES One of the busiest establishments in town at present is that of K (Jrilliths and Co.. where a big stall' is working under pressure to keep pice with the orders for grass seed pouring in upon the tirm. Practically all the available space in the large establishment is at present devoted to the handling of the orders, and the, consignments arc going out continually. .Solwithstanding that a record shipment of Sutton's English seeds -principally "Devon Eavcr Kye"—arrived a week or two ago. it will barely sullice to fullil orders until the next shipment is to hand. Sutton's seeds are splendidly packed in England, hermetically sealed tanks lieing used, and the seeds open up in capital order. The germinating powers of seed from eacli tank is tested on the premises before orders are iilled from them, after which the seed is passed on to the packers. Samples of Sutton's Devon Eaver live taken from two tanks five days agi, and sown in the germinating beds side by side with samples of Ihe best procurable colonial rye. already show great disparity in producing capacity, the English grass being of exceptionally! strong growth in comparison with the colonial, while the germinating percentage is noticeably very much higher. Thi' mixing and consigning rooms at the present moment convey some idea of the anxiety of Taranaki farmers to take advantage of the present ideal sowing weather. The following mixture, taken at random from n list of orders being filled, may be taken as an average samples of varieties; —Devon Eaver rye, Italian rye. cocksfoot, white clover (Sutton's), cow-grass' (Sutton's), red clover (Sutton's!, pot pretends, meadowfoxtail, crested fogtail. small sheep fescue, timothy, purple-top turnip, mustard, rape, and alsyke. While some farmers' mixtures are not so claliorate, very few omit to stipulate Devon Eaver rye. the noted English perennial evidently liaving established its claim for preferment in Taranaki.
