More perfect weather could not have prevailed for the New Plymouth High .School athletic sports, held at tile Kecreation Grounds yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of parents and friends of the scholars ,thc seating accommodation of the terraces shaded from the sun's rays being particularly
sought after. The convincing grounc for the sports was the new grounds recently laid down. The track was in ex-
cellent running order. Most of the events brought out good fields, and the finishes were all interesting, some of them k'iiig fought out to the last inch.
The committee of management had made excellent appointments and the afternoon Has thoroughly enjoyed by competitors and spectator* alike. A refreshment tent at which a very welcome cup of afternoon tea could lie obtained was on the ground, the refreshments being provided and dispensed by the girl* of the school. During the afternoon the headmaster, Mr. 11. Ward, received the following wire from ■). Billiard, L\ Shaw, E. Cutfield, and It. Quilliam, old boys of the school, and now at the Nelson College:—"Wish you every success." Mr. j. L. Wilson, chairman of the Board of Governors, briefly addressed the scholars, during the course of his remarks announcing that the scholars would be given a holiday on the morrow. Three hearty cheers followed the announcement. Results:—

(From Our Own Correspondent). The second annual sports of the \Yirea Athletic Club was held in the Recreation Grounds on Wednesday, and proved most successful. There was :i large attendance. There being no bookmakers present, the sompetitors were "all out" for the prize money. The fields were not so large as those of last year's, but those for chopping were larger. The Warca Cup was won by if. Hill, as also was the Handicap Chop. Mr. 11. C'orbett was starter for the running, and gave every satisfaction. Mr. A. Guy acted as starter for the chopping events. The Puniho Brass Band played some line selectious. A protest was entered in the Novice Chop against F. Kirk, the winner, for not being registered, and the second man, C. Jfagun, was awarded the prize. Results:— Novice Chop—F. Kirk (disqualified) 1, C. Magou 2/ Eight started. Time, lmiu 2see.

The sheep-guessing competition was won liv Misses A. Jordan and J. Orr, who both guessed the same weight, viz.. 13111)6. The sheep was kindly given hy Mr. A. Alexander. The gate takings amounted to over V.IU.
A grand concert, was held in the hall in the evening. There was a very large crowd present, the hall being packed. It was almost impossible to lind standing rooms, much less sitting space. M'. 11. Corlictt presided. The programme na< opened with a selection by the Ducker Familv. Contributions woe given by—Miss Cassie, "Still 1 should Love you"; Mr. Cooper, "Waiting to have a Try"; Miss A. "The boy in the sailor cap"; Mr. Cameron, hornpipe; Mr. W. Larking, "Kathleen Mavourneen"; Mr. Ross, dance (encored); Mr. Cooper "Rather Early"; Mr. Cameron, pipe selection. The concert was one of the l>est ever held m th.. hill The room was afterwards cleared for dancing, which was kept going until the early hours of Thursday morning.
