"When the captain jumped overboard, Jackson threw him a plank, but he believes the captain failed to reach it, and that both he and the mate wore drowned.
When Hayes left the Islands, Mortimer and Jackson were under arrest at Tarawa. The authorities were com* municating with the Italian Consul at Cnllao with a view to identifying the stolen vessel.
Mortimer was reticent and refused to say anything when he was shown Jackson's confession.
A native was placed in charge of the schooner, which was in nn exposed positiou, and appeared likely to break up.
