BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Among the business set down I'or tonight's meeting of the Borough Council is the consideration of the following reports:— WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee to iccomuii'iid— That the application for right-of-way to Mr. lloldswortlfs property be referred to the borough engineer to report upon; ih.it the Eliol Koad Jioaril be granted the use of the roa,| roller at a lime to be fixed by the foreman, for the sum of XI per day: thai consideration of .Mr. Enroth'- appiieiiijon for a reeouiiection with the water service be deferred, and .Mr. Enroth be notified to appear at the Council meeting on Monday next; that the request of .Messrs. Brown and Co. for a fontpath in Bulkelcy-terracc along their Montage be granted, Messrs. lirown and Co. to supply the timber free of cost; that Mr. A. J. Mcintosh be informed that ihe Council cannot at the prison juncture see its way to entertain his offer to sell part of the Taranaki Hotel site for an extension of Cill-slrect: that the borough engineer report as to the best means and cost of installing the telephone to the reservoir cottage; that the borough engineer report on the cost of procuring a gauge for the filters.
ELECTRIC LIUfIT. The engineer reports that the work of streuglueuiug the pole line had been continued as opportunity allowed. All the heavier poles required had now been put in save one. UiUy three poles re-J quire to be strengthened, and a few' heavier cross arms put, up. As suon as the above was completed he proposed lowering the telephone wires to make room lor the new high-tension wires. The Telegraph Department hud made a start with the Fitzroy alterations, but were waiting for more poles before ttiey could complete. As soon as the telephone wires were transferred he' would be able to proceed with the erection of the Council's line. The returns for energy supplied last month made the revenue £l3l 15s lud. The committee recommend that the salary of Air. Sandilands, powerhouse engineer, be increased -by £25 per annum, and that in consideration of the extra services in connection with the erection ot the powerhouse plant, the increase date as from Ist January last.
DRAIN ACE. The Drainage Committee to recommend—That Mrs. M. West lie informed that no funds are available for extension of sewers in Molcsworth-sfrect; that Mr. Reiuiell's letter re the drainage of his property lie referred to the borough engineer to report upon; tint Mrs. RogersJ complaint re drainage in Lemon-street be referred to the borough engineer to report upon; and recommending the Council to connect the properties of certain residents with the sewers.
ABATTOIRS. The abattoir manager reports for February Slaughtered jor local consumption: Cows, 117; bullocks, 43; calves, lti; sheep, 510; lamos. luij pigs, 141; tripes cleaned, 101; and one set of calves' ieet. Compared with the corresponding month ol last, year, th,;y showed as follows:—lncreases, cattle lU, sheep 3, lambs 18, pigs 28,' suckers 5, tripes 4; decrease, calves 1. There were condemned, four cattle for tuberculosis, one sheep for dropsy, one pig for tuberculosis, and one for' maligna ot growths. There were slaughtered for export, cows 131, bullocks 5, bulls 181, calves 1; total, 319—an increase of 252 head. Of these there were condemned, lti for tuberculosis and one for emaciation. Total fees for month. £17.") 2s 9d; rents, £4 3s fid; total revenue, ilii) 8s 3d—an increase of £GO lis 3d. Although a short month, it will be seen by the figures given above that the work has been very heavy and consistent, 63 more cattle having been slaughtered during the month than has ever been done in the time before. I had another man to help the stall' get through the work. I would suggest that the Council erect the eleetric C lifts as soon as possible, so as to make the work of the men lighter. There is a cow missing from the lower paddock. It lias a tar brand "R" on it. We ate also a bull short. FINANCE.
The Finance Committee to recommend—That accounts as per schedule lie passed for payment: Ordinary account, £3BB Us 3d; loan accounts, £133 9s 2; total, £543 15s 3d.
The following are the balances at the Bank of New Zealand of the different banking accounts:—District fund, credit £3020 19s fid; special loan, credit £534 •Is lid; abattoir extension, credit £1141; drainage, credit £54 12s 3dwaterworks, credit £225 13s; electric light, credit £2500.
