BOWLING.

lARANAKI TOURNAMENT. The Taranaki Bowling Tournament commenced on the Hawera green yesterday morning. Some rain had iallen during the night and there were sliowem in the morning, but the weather was warm. The president of the Hawera Club (Mr J. B. Foy), who cordially welcomed the visitors, saiil he was very sorry they had not been favored with finer weather. It had been decided t" proceed with the tournament, and play would continue unless the weather became worse. It was gratifying that so many entries had been received -from from all over Taranaki. Out of the ten clubs nine had entered. This showed the hold Irewling had over the Dominion, and of this province in particular, lie trusted that the tournament would be an unqualified success, and although all could not win he hoped they would lave an enjoyable time and leave lliiwtra very pleased with the tournament.

The Mayor (Mr. B. C. Robbins), on liehalf of the citizen's, welcomed the visitors to Hawera. Like Mr. Foy, he deprecated the sudden change in the weather, but hoped all would spend a pleasant outing. He spoke of the stimulus given to bowling by tournaments, and of the Ix'ncfit the present one would he to the Hawera Club and Hawera itself. The first round resulted:— Pihama—R. Lambie. McHardv, \V. • PAUL MEMORIAL - ' I.ATKWAY. Some months ago it was decided to solicit subscriptions from bowlers with a view to commemorating the interest in Xew Zealand bowling token by the late Mr. James Paul, president of the Xew- Plymouth Club. The idea "caught on," everyone with any knowledge o! the history of the game knowing how much had l>een done by this veteran bowler. The committee decided that the memorial should take the form of i gateway to the Xew Plymouth green, where Mr. Paul -pent many happy afternoons. The decision was a happy one, for the pre.-ent entrance is not at all imposing. But the new gateway, designed by Mr. .lames Sanderson. Imassive and ornamental in appearance.
