Per Press Association. I Christchiireh, Last Night. The Te Oranga Home enquiry was continued to day. The witness who had concluded her evidence in chief yesterday was tendered tor cross-examination.
| She said her complaints generally were I not against tin- matron, but against, tinway they had to into work. She
wanted to do housework instead of wood-chopping. She did not know of the plot among the girts to abscond in the winter of last year. The food was s.iort, but she never made any complaint. She had been punished for thieatening to kill a girl. She did not get on well witli all the members of the •stail. They were too fond of growling at her. Punishment was inflicted with the broad side of the strap. The «irl lay on n bed, and was punished her nightgown. The matron had boxed her ears; that caused a bnzzing in the ears, but site was not exactly deaf. Another witness, whose hair had been cut for escaping. s ; »id she <7id not ask other girls to go t 0 a house of ill f-mie. Jhe matron thumped her down the passage when she was brought back, and put her into a cell. .She had three meals , a day on dry bread and water, and ten strokes with the strap. She had heard the nuvtvon make remarks about the bhe called one of the girls an infuriated annual, ami another a vufair brawler.
