At a meeting of ilie Auckland Licensing (.'oinniitt.ee, Sub-Inspector (Jordon *aid he wished to bring under notice a matter that had come to the police in the nature of a surprise—the drinking habit aw'ong women at some of the suburban hotels. They were mostly well-dressed respectable women, £nd were not infrequently accompanied by young girls and children. In hotels vi>ited on one night n<> less than fifty-live women who had live chidren with them were found drinking. In some hotels there were rooms specially marked "Tor ladies only." lie mentioned the matter in the hope that the committee might suggest souic means 01 preventing the evil spreading.

Jll the evening the rain censed and the sky was clear before midnight. Showers however, fell during the early hours of the morning, and fywlay the sky is again overcast, and more ruin threatening. The rainfall in North Canterbury yesterday was insignificant.

Dr. Purdy proposes a system of free medical advice to poor mothers, and the provision of free meals for them after childbirth by the Charitable Aid Board.
METIIODTST CONFIDENCE. Auckland, Last Nighl. At this evening's sitting of the Methodist Conference, a discussion took place 011 Home Missions. The president, in introducing the subject, said that what was wanted now was not a now theology but a new enthusiasm. The secretary drew attention to the report showing that the numerical strength of the Methodist Church in New Zealand was Hi,208, an increase of 401 during the year. The special committee appointed to draw up a report On| the Home Miss Son policy stated that the circumstances of the Dominion, and espccally in the Nor Island, called for a policy of vigorous aggression on the part of tho Metliodi.-t Church. !Ehe Rev. W. Slafls alluded to the spiritual destination of the great majority of the people of the Dominion, After lengthy discussion, a resolution on tilt) subject of Home Missions was carried 011 the lines of the committee's recommendations.
Later. During the course of his remarks upon the Home Mission and church extension policy at the Methodist Conference to-night, the Kev. \V. Slade, expresident, made allusion to his previous statement that there were 700,000 nonchurchgoers in the Dominion. This declaration, however, was met with cries of "Query!" whereupon Mr. Slade explained that lie got his figures from the Registrar-General. "But," pointed out another member, ''those figures include babies." "Very well, then," relriitc Mr. Slade, "we will make it half a million, which will allow for the babies; but babies, 1 might say, are get . scarce now." (Laughter).
SUCCESSFUL' CLEARING SALE.
Oaniaru, Last Night. The clearing sale at Otckaike Estate, recently purchased by the Governmsnt, took place to-day. The sheep wero tho fcWneipal feature of the sale, of which .17,000 will be ofi'ered. The copious rainfall of yesterday and to-day added, it is estimated, about C7o#' to the' value. Half-bred ewes, 2-tooth, brought 13s 3d to 17s 2d, three-quartcrbred ewes 18s to 18s 2d. halfbred, 4-tooth, 20s Id half bred fi-tooth 225, halfbred S-tooth 15s to 15s fid, full mouth do. lis (Id to lis ftd. The sale was a successful one, buyers being present from Southland. Otago, and Canterbury.
MAYORAL ELECTION. Palmerston N., Last Night. A requisition signed by some <lO prominent citizens has been handed to Cr. Nash, asking hiin to allow himself to be nominated to contest the Mayoralty at .the coining election. Cr. Nash has decided not to accede to the request on this occasion.
