Per Press Association. Whangarei, Saturday. The steamer Gaelic got into shallow water in Waipuu river. A rope was requisitioned Do haul her -into the channel. David Stunoch, her engineer, got his left foot cjmglit in the bight as ihe rope hightened, and the foot was torn oil'. He was removed to the hospital, where the bone was amputated. Stunoch lies in a precarious condition as the result of the operation and shock.

At the inquest on Henry Wilton plasterer, who died from injuries sustained by falling from a scaffolding at the Caledonian Hotel, a verdict of accidental death was returned, the jui'v adding a rider to the effect that more care should be taken in testing timber for the erection of scaffolding. Christehurch, Last Niaht. S. R. Merritt, who was injured in the motor accident on February 22nd, died at; the hospital at .> o'clock this morning. After hearing the evidence of Dr. Crooko, house surgeon at the hospital, as to the condition of Merritt when admitted, the inquest adjourned till March •'ith._ in order to allow of further enquiries beius made as to the exact cause of (he accident.
