DEATH AT SEA. Christchurch, Last Night. ]{. W. Kayncr, aged 82 years, who for over thirty years acted as postmaster and constable at Chatham Islands, died on tli e Steamer Hippie on Thursday morning, when the vessel was about 100 miles from the islands. The gentleman had been suffering for some time from cancer, and it is to this dis-

ease that his death is attributed. He boarded the Ripple at the Chathanis on Wednesday, and he died early on the following day, Dr. Poinare, who was on the ship, being in attendance. As the vessel had only completed a small portion of her trip to Lyttelton, the body was buried at sea on Thursday afternoon.
