TERRIBLE DEATH.
A DRUNKEN MAN'S PATE. Masterton, Last Night. Details of the fire at Mauriceville in which W. S. Mortensen lost his life show that, deceased, his wife, and another inan visited the Masterton Show yesterday, where deceased got very drunk' and had to be taken liDme again by a man. On arrival at home, the wife, who was afraid of deceased when in drink', went to bed with her five children, leaving deceased up. Ifc said: "Good-bye all; I'll make it warm for you to-morrow." The wife took no notice of this remark', as he had often threatened to burn the house down, but went to sleep. Later she heard tile crackling of burning timber and liad only just time to get the children out of the house, the building being consumed in haii an hour. Deceased's body was found near the window jmnied almost to a cinder, the legs being burned completely olf. It fa surmised that the fire was caused through deceased letting the kerosene lamp fall. An inquest will be held to-tnori'Ow.
