Indeed, hav ll »g«d to the circumstance*, their pa ° n.g game was overdone; to indulge in it three yards out, with a good portion tackled, was absurd, and a number of opportunities to score were lost in „. - sequence. Kivell showed plentv of dash and, assisted by Stohr, got the ball hrough fw hb siJe As . t-eeable feature was that neither team nad a suitable left wing man . The swimming gala later in the ovenmg is generally conceded to have beci the best held by the club for at least two seasons. The programme of raeim. events was sufficiently varied to suit all classes of swimmers, a fact to which the number of entries bore testimony, ami the excellence „f the handicapping left no room for the usual growl. My impression is that Gibbons is not
up to lik last-season form; Uio\i«h there may | K - nu difference or oven °n improvement in hi, time, it is certain that Jin swimming is more labored than formerly. I'lankuch finished all of his races in good style, and were h e to take the sport seriously I would be less surpnsed at what he could do than what he couldu t. - For Brow n a 6 a sportsman l have the greatest admiration. Without a doubt Charlie has had the hardest of luck, yet he never complains. If pluck ought to be rewarded, then quite a number of successes should await him it would have been reasonable to expect that well-nigh all the bovs who atttnd the laths would have competed in the graceful swimming. Onlv seven entries were received, and of the competitors but two (the brothers Mcllvnde) attempted the back stroke-one only with any degree of success. The -awkward" ontrv from the chute provided plenty of fun—for the spectators. "Unique" entry would, however, have allowed tlie participants more ■scope for their ingenuity. The method in which the entire arrangements of the gala were carried out was a model for similar functions here and elsewhere, and the officials concerned can lie complimented on it.
