THE GOOLDS' FATE.

Monte Carlo, February 13. Vere Goold- and Mrs .Goold, the perpetrators of the Monte Carlo murder, will shortly be sent to Cayenne, m French Guiuna, where they will be imprisoned for life. The commutation or the sentence of death passed on Mrs. Goold cannot be ■said to be unexpected, The reprieve that was granted to a child-murderer like Sollcilland would scarcely be withheld from a woman, even though sho was Mrs. Goold. At the same time the commutations of death sentence continue to arouse much opposition in France. M. Collier writes in the "Matin":—"There is no possible happiness or security for private people or to the community at large if pernicious germs and individuals are not destroyed. As a matter of fact, this debauch of lmmanitarianism is not of very good omen. The eighteenth century made a prodigious consumption of sentimentality with the only result of massacres on a large scale. We are in our turn aentimental. It will end badly." Mrs. Goold's husband was sentenced to imprisonment for life for his share in the murder. The body of the victim was subsequently dissected and packed in a trunk. Drink, gambling, and robbery were the main factors in the tragedy.
