At the .Supreme Court to-day Archibald -McXalj wig convicted <>f * stealin" .1711,) from a deaf mute named David .Sutherland. Sutherland had been ini prisoned for habitual drunkenness \A lien taken to gaol he had a considerable sum of money, which was p.iid by tlie authorities into the Public Trust account. When Sutherland left the gaol tile gaoler returned the money to Suth-j erlaiul, who began to celebrate his release by getting intoxicated, and way known to cash a cheque for ~£lls, receiving the money chiefly in £2O notes. On dune 18th Sutherland's de-id body was found in Wellington harbor. The only cash in the pockets of his clothes \va soiie penny. It was not suggested by the Crown that JlcXab was conccrn-i ed in any way with Sutherland's death, but that he robbed Sutherland of his money and shared it with others to keep them quiet. The prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to twelve months' hard labor. John George Coiilson, was acquitted on a charge of stealing a horse, trap and harness, valued at ,Cl 5, from George Henry Perry nt CartcHon. Tlie Crown declined to proceed wfth a second indictment charging Coulson with stealing two pigs from Perry.
