HOSPITAL SATURDAY.

The annual effort on behalf of the New l'lyjinuuth Hospital was most successful, On Saturday morning a boat of ladies set out, armed with boxes and badges, after voluntary subscriptions to the funds. Every street, and block, and suburb was systematically worked. Collectors visited lnglewood, Waitara, ilahotu, and l'ungarehu. .in the town itself the collectors were very energetic, and tile appeals in most c.ises met clieerful givers. The boxes were opened on Saturday night, and were found to contain £123 13s yd, lnglewood contributing £l3 10s, and Waitara £7 3s. The best box handed in contained £2O (is lOd, and the next best was £l3 3s. The smallest contribution handed in to the secretary was a threepenny piece, the gift of a little Maori boy patient in the hospital. There are three boxes to come in from Urenui, Raliotu, and Pungarehu. Yesterday the Taranaki Garrison, New Plymouth Military Band, and the lnglewood Brass Band gave a sacied concert in the Recreation Grounds to a very large concourse of people, the music being very much appreciated. Speeches were delivered by his Worship the Mayor, Messrs Okey and Jennings, M.'sP,, and F. Bellringer, chairman of the Board, thej last-named throwing out a hint that the Board would be pleased to hear from some philanthropic and wealthy persons who was anxious to hand down his name to posterity as a public benefactor. If there were such a lady or gentleman, the opportunity to do this was here—for a cancer ward was needed at the hospital. He also took the opportunity of thanking thei Mayoress and her noble band of workers who had so willingly helped in the effort. Yesterday's gifts brought the total to £142, exclusive of the three boxes yet to come in. The chairman of the Board also tenders the thanks of the Board to the bands for their assistance. ,
