A considerable amount of excitement wascanscd on the ferry steamer .Maori during the voyage from Wellington to Lyttelton last night, it is stated that the girl, named Olive Laura (J rimes, said to be well connected in Wellington, made two attempts to throw herself overboard, if was noticed when see joined the steamer in Wellington that she was rather depressed in her manner, but as the night wore on she became rather hysterical, and made the at-

tempts at self-destruction. Miss (.ivhum was charged this afternoon before Mr. J.I. \Y. Bishop, S.M, with attempting to commit suicide. The young lady said, when asked for an explanation, that she was rather hysterical at times. A little time ago a young man whom she was engaged to died. She met a brother to this gentleman on the Maori last evening, and after talking about her lamented, became despondent, and attempted to jump overboard. She had had audi a lesson now that she would not commit the act again. The magistrate pointed out the serious position she had placed herself in, and after getting a promise from her that she would not. make an attempt to take her life again, he discharged her.
