BUSH AND GRASS FIRES.
ON COROMANDKL PENINSULA. Per Frees Association. Auckland, Saturday. Bwh fires are still raging on the Coromandel Peninsula, and unless rain fulls soon additional valuable timber areas will be devastated. Three men working to save a dam in the Rangihau block had a perilous experience. Before they were aware of their position they were surrounded by flames They took refuge in a creek, where the water barely covered their bodies,.,crawling out more desd than alive when the fire had passed.
SCENIC BUSH DESTROYED Maßterton, Last Night. 0»e of the prettiest pieces of bush remaining at Mntahiwi, in the vicinity of Moaterton, was destroyed by fire on Saturday, and Sunday. The, residence of Henry Holmes at Matahiwi narrowly escaped destruction. A gang of men, Including the members of the fire brigade, kept the fire- back. Fortunately the wind changed,) otherwise the firqj would have swept, the Upper block.
