LORD CUKZOYS ELECTION,
London, January 22. llie question has been raised whether Lord Guram is entitled to take hii w«» in the House of Lords as a represent*. tlyc of the Irish peers. Technically he failed to establish his own right to vote at such elections, and therefore his eligibility as a candidate. The matter has been left to the Houso of Lords to decide Lord Ashtown was the candidate with the next highest number of votes.
.There are twenty-eight representative liish peers who are elected for life, and Irish peers who arc not representative peers may sit in the House of Common for any borough or county constituency in Great Britain. Kilmane, who recently committed suicide m Paris, created the vacancy in the representation of the Irish peers which Lord Curzon now fills. He elplained, on announcing his intention of seeking election, that the strain of the work which he had to do as GovernorGeneral of India prevented hi ra f rom standing for a seat in the House of Commons, and added that he was debarred from entering the Lords bv the ordinary channels by the refusal of the Prime Minister («, Henry Campbell TnlZ* t0 Mm to ■* with 11 the other ex-Viceroys of India on those benches. .. -.
