WELCOME RAINS.
t Per Press Association. IN CANTERBURY. Christchurch, Friday. _ A change has come in the weather. I here were two hours of rainfall over- 1 night, and it was showery again at nine this morning. The «ky is now again clear, with bright sunshine. IN WAIRARAPA. Masterton, Friday. Kam set in at an early hour tlfc's. morning, and thirty points was registered by !) o'clock. The visitation has proved the salvation of the district as a breeze which hid sprung up at sunset and increased almost to a gale, fanned the burning logs and spread the fires rapidly, sending up heavy columns of smoke. The rain relieved the anxiety telt throughout the district lest widespread devastation should result The oldest residents do not recollect such another prolonged period of drought and intense heat. The temperature has fall en several degrees since yesterday.
